Group leader : Mirta B. GORDON
Our research is oriented to problems of Machine Learning. Our scientific projects concern two aspects : the theoretical analysis and modeling of complex learning systems, and the development of methods for classification and discrimination taking into account the cognitive aspects of these tasks. Thanks to the multi-disciplinary composition of our team, our approach to the learning tasks includes techniques issued from both the numerical and the symbolic paradigms. Currently, we collaborate with researchers in several applications domains, namely :
- Bioinformatics : with the CADERIGE project whose goal is to extract the knowledge about genic interactions from Medline abstracts (Action Bio-informatique inter-EPST). This project involves a collaboration between LIPN (Paris XIII), LRI (Paris X), INRA (centres Jouy et rennes) and IRISA. We have also a collaboration with the CEA, to analyze the bioactivity of the molecules ; the data comes from the Screening plateform (HTS) of CEA/DSVCMBA. In this context, since the end of 2004 we are the charge of the ACCAMBA project (ACI IMPbio) gathering some groups of CEA (Grenoble & Saclay, l'Institut Curie, LRI (Paris X), l'IBL (Lille) and CNRS (Roscoff). Finally, we have participated to an «Action Specifique » of CNRS : Apprentissage et BioInformatique.

- Didactics : we participate to the Cognitique-Algèbre project aiming at the cognitive modelization of the students in algebra domain. We are using clustering methods in order to elaborate the student categories from the data collected in the classroom with APLUSIX editor.

- Modeling of economic and social systems : through our participation to the spring school "Dynamics of Complex Systems and Applications to Social Sciences: models, concepts, methods" and the project ELICCIR. We study models of discrete choice, and the influence of economic agents' interactions on the market dynamics.

- Cognitive Sciences and AI: through our participation to the «Pôle Rhône-Alpes de Sciences Cognitives » (PRASC), to the « GDR Mathématiques des systèmes perceptifs et cognitifs (MSPC) » and to the CENECC (CENtre d'Etudes des systèmes Complexes et de la Cognition) and its thematical schools (proceedings). We also collaborate with the « Centre Universitaire d'Informatique » (CUI) of Geneva.

- Natural Language Processing (NLP) : with the CADERIGE project of course but also through our participations to «Actions Specifiques » of the CNRS : «Construction de produits terminologiques à partir de corpus » (ASSTICCOT) and « Fouille de textes» (FdT).
