The predecessor of the Chinese Mathematical Society (CMS) is the Chinese Society of Mathematical Sciences which was coordinating the mathematical activities in China from 1929 through 1936. Founded in July 1935, the CMS has been the major organization leading and coordinating the development of mathematics in China. In 1936, one professional mathematical journal and a popular mathematical magazine were first published. Due to the Japanese invasion, the regular activities of the CMS were interrupted from 1938 to 1945. At that period, a New CMS was founded. The CMS regularized its activities in 1948.

Important developments of the CMS have been carried out since 1949. The CMS now is a professional society comprising thousands of members and publishes about ten mathematical journals and several book series.
